Propane is the unsung hero of off-grid living. While solar panels get the attention, propane handles the jobs that electricity struggles with: cooking quickly, heating reliably on the coldest nights, and delivering hot water on demand without a massive battery bank. After six years on a propane-powered homestead, these are the appliances I would buy again — and the ones I would avoid.

Why Propane Works So Well Off-Grid

Three reasons propane dominates off-grid homesteads:

  1. Energy density — propane contains roughly 25× more energy per pound than a lithium battery. A 100-gallon propane tank (~170 lbs full) stores the equivalent of 420 kWh of energy. Storing that much energy in lithium batteries would cost $50,000+.
  2. Reliability — propane appliances work at any temperature (propane stays liquid to -44°F, well below any reasonable off-grid climate). Electric appliances fail in power outages; propane appliances do not.
  3. Familiar technology — propane appliances have been refined for decades. They are simple to install, service, and repair with widely available parts.

What I use: We have run a Thor range for four years with no issues. The high-BTU burners reach cooking temperature in seconds and the simmer burner is genuinely low — important for yogurt, melting chocolate, and slow sauces.

Empava 36-Inch Gas Cooktop ($350–$450)

If you have an existing oven or prefer a wall oven, the Empava cooktop offers five burners in a 36-inch format at an excellent price. A propane tankless heater uses zero electricity (most models run on AA batteries for ignition) and heats water only when you need it.

The Rinnai V65 is a workhorse: 6.5 gallons per minute (GPM) at a 35°F temperature rise, meaning it can run two showers simultaneously in most climates. The V65eP is the exterior-mount model — mounted outside the home, eliminating venting requirements inside. Install it on a south-facing exterior wall for easy access and reliable performance to 0°F. The digital controller lets you set water temperature in one-degree increments.

For a homestead already using significant propane for heating and cooking, adding the refrigerator’s consumption to a bulk tank is cost-effective and eliminates the refrigerator’s electrical load entirely.

Maintenance note: Propane refrigerators require keeping the unit level (within 3 degrees) to function correctly. They also need annual burner cleaning and occasional cooling unit service. Build this into your maintenance budget.

Vestfrost / Isotherm 12V DC Compressor Refrigerators — Alternative
